Touring
There are many places of historical interest and natural beauty in the Algarve within a day’s drive.
To experience the Algarve coast yet avoid the summer crowds, take the coastal highway east and 40 km beyond Faro, you’ll hit Tavira, a charming little sunbaked town with a delightful mix of traditional Portuguese heritage and deep-rooted Moorish influences. Or go west to Sagres and Cabo San Vincente, a rocky, windswept promontory and the westernmost point of Europe, where Henry the Navigator set out to discover the world.
Closer by, don’t miss a visit to the spa town of Caldas de Monchique, famous since Roman times for its hot springs, a 15-minute drive down the mountain from Monchique, or the historic town of Silves, the ancient capital of the Algarve under the Moors in the 9-12th century, less than an hour away. Both are interesting places to explore and enjoy a leisurely afternoon or evening meal before driving home.
Beachgoing
Take your pick! Head a half-hour south and you’ll hit the Algarve coast, with its lively towns and little coves interspersed with open stretches of white sand beaches and minimal surf, perfect for swimming. Or if you’re looking for a more rugged setting, wind your way down the mountain back road and west along the highway towards Alzejur, a town of whitewashed houses and cobbled streets dominated by the ruins of a 10th century Moorish castle. The wild and beautiful beaches of Portugal’s Atlantic coast surrounding the town are ideal for body surfing and photography.

Dining
